The Happy Wanderers from Berkhamsted have been busy delivering cake to their members to celebrate their 64th birthday.
The club for elderly disabled people living in Berkhamsted and Northchurch normally celebrates its birthday in Potten End Village Hall, but had to cancel celebrations this year due to COVID-19.
Instead, the charity decided to deliver 36 boxes of cake baked by Isobel Wilkinson to the homes of their members.
Barbara Bonwitt, from the Happy Wanderers, said that members were not told in advance about the cake delivery, so it was a lovely surprise.
She said: “Everybody was delighted. As much as anything, it was just nice for them to see somebody.
“People are always so pleased to see somebody when you are living on your own and do not get many visitors. Particularly at the moment when you are not encouraged to have visitors.”
The Happy Wanderers hope to be back holding their twice monthly meetings by September at the earliest, but they realise this might not be possible.
Barbara said that until then they will be keeping in touch with members to keep spirits up.
She said: “We do try to keep in touch with people because these are people that often live on their own, so a couple of us try to phone round every fortnight, so people know there are people thinking about them.
“There is nothing we can do but just keep our fingers crossed and just keep smiling.”
