A 30-year-old woman from Hemel Hempstead has admitted killing her daughter but denied murder at the start of a trial in Luton Crown Court yesterday (Monday, March 24).
Shilyrand Charigwati, of Juniper Square, Hemel Hempstead, was arrested on April 15, 2024, after Herts Police attended the address the day before. A child was taken to hospital and unfortunately died a short time later.
Miss Charigwati’s daughter has now been named: Roselyn.
Miss Charigwati’s trial began yesterday.
According to the BBC, a judge gave jurors an outline of the case at the start of the trial. Mrs Justice Heather Williams told jurors that the case was “on any view very distressing”, but said they must try Miss Charigwati “fairly”.
It has also been reported that Miss Charigwati “admits killing Roselyn but denies that it was murder”.
It is alleged that the judge told jurors that psychiatrists, called by prosecution and defence lawyers, would give evidence about Miss Charigwati’s “state of mind” when she killed her daughter.
Justice Williams said: “[Charigwati] says that her actions were the result of a mental illness she was suffering from at the time, which reduces her lawful responsibility.”
The trial continues.
