‘VALUED COLLEAGUE’: King Langley Fire Station pay tribute to Britain’s longest-serving fire investigation dog

Published on: 12th December 2024   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

The “devastated” crew at Kings Langley Fire Station shared the passing of their “valued colleague” Reqs on Thursday, November 14.

With 11 years of service, the black Labrador is believed to be one of Britain’s longest-serving fire investigation dogs.

Using his sense of smell, Reqs would identify the presence of flammable liquids at scenes to determine whether a fire was started deliberately.

His work contributed to the improvement of conviction rates for people who start fires.

Throughout his time with Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Reqs attended 500 fires, serving faithfully alongside his handler Nikki Harvey.

Though he retired in July 2023, in November last year he became 42nd recipient of the PDSA Order of Merit in recognition of his lifetime of dedication and hard work.

Nikki said: “His achievements over the course of his career show just what a remarkable dog he was, and I feel privileged that I got to share his life – training and working with him, taking him for long walks, watching him play with his toys and enjoying his retirement.”
