UNITY GAMES: Stanmore sports organisation takes largest contingent to global event

Stanmore Jafferys (SJ) took the largest contingent in the whole competition to the Unity Games, which took place in Dubai from December 24 to 29.

More than 230 members of the community sports organisation travelled overseas for the games, which saw 37 Islamic jamaats come together to compete across a number of sports.

SJ had teams in all 10 different disciplines. They reached the finals in football and badminton, and lifted trophies in tennis and volleyball.

Shane Merali, head of SJ, said: “Throughout the last six days, we felt that we’ve had the whole community behind us.

“We had the largest contingent at these games; I think we made up about 25 per cent of the total number. We partook in every single sport and the results have been outstanding.

“I know we haven’t won as many finals as we would have liked, but then you win some and you lose some.

“I could not have been prouder of the efforts you have all put in over the last six months. I know we took some bitter losses, but I can proudly say with all humbleness that I believe we are the best sports club in the Shia World by a distance.”
