A local club has paid tribute to a “beloved” former player and coach.
Amersham & Chiltern RFC player and Chesham RFC coach Neil Aves passed away while on holiday in Majorca on Saturday, June 15.
Neil came to Amersham & Chiltern RFC looking to fulfil an ambition to play a game of rugby before he was 50. Despite loving rugby and following the sport all his life, Neil never had a good opportunity to play competitive social rugby.
Encouraged by his rugby-loving wife Sarah, daughter Ella and stepdaughter Jess, Neil approached the club. This turned out to be more than a one game ‘bucket list’ challenge and led to a decade-long commitment to the 4XV and then 3XV, playing well over 50 games.
Writing on their website, the club said: “It is an unexpected loss and has been felt very strongly in the local community.
“The players of the 4XV and 3XV would therefore like to express our deepest sorrow to Neil’s family and to pay tribute to Neil’s contribution to Chiltern over the years. He is and always will be a 4XV legend but most of all he was a friend who we will miss greatly.”
