TV TOWN: Amersham becomes the setting for spooky new sci-fi show

Published on: 11th June 2022   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

Amersham residents watching the new Sky Max sci-fi horror drama The Midwich Cuckoos may be finding the town’s setting Midwich all too familiar.

That’s because most of the programme, which stars Keeley Hawes and Max Beesley, was filmed in and around the town, doubling for the series’ sleepy rural setting.

Based on the 1957 book by well-known science fiction author John Wyndham, the story was famously adapted into the 1960 film Village of the Damned, which was filmed in nearby Letchmore Heath.

The story concerns the village of Midwich, where randomly one night all women of child-bearing age inexplicably fall pregnant. When the children are born, it soon becomes clear that there is something different, perhaps even alien about them.

Amersham is no stranger to being a filming location for grisly and creepy tales, with episodes of Midsomer Murders and Hammer House of Horror having previously used the town as a backdrop.

Filming for this new series took place in September last year. Several scenes were also filmed in nearby St Albans in Hertfordshire.

The full series of The Midwich Cuckoos is available on Sky Max and on Now TV.
