TREE TALK: Retired Chorleywood teacher’s new novel teaches children about trees

Published on: 7th June 2024   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

A retired Chorleywood teacher has published her first book in an effort to teach more children about the natural world.

Grandmother Willow’s Tree School by Lesley Walsh is aimed at five to seven year olds. The book follows a group of children as they ask wise Grandmother Willow questions about trees.

Speaking to Chorleywood News, Lesley said: “I’ve always been interested in trees and worked with them in a voluntary capacity, but I’ve found that many adults can’t identify tree species, so I want to try and rectify that by teaching children.

“The concept of the book was to make it fun to learn, and I’ve designed it to be accessible and inclusive to children of all ages.”

Written with children with sensory issues in mind, Lesley chose illustrator Sarah-Leigh Wills to help make the book as visually appealing as possible.

The book also provides activities for parents and children to do together, and teaches readers all about the science of trees and how humans live in partnership with them.

The book costs £6.99 and is available from here.
