Local passengers commuting into London from Kings Langley and Apsley have been hit with “outrageous prices”, after it was revealed they had been undercharged for their journeys.
London Northwestern Railway (LNR) announced that some customers had been undercharged due to a technical issue, following the introduction of pay-as-you-go with contactless at several stations earlier this year.
The affected stations also include Berkhamsted, St Albans, Garston, Hemel Hempstead, Tring, and Watford North.
Contactless users usually benefit from daily or Monday to Sunday capping. This means that if a customer uses the same card or device to pay for all journeys in a day or week, the price will stay below a certain amount.
Now, following LNR’s announcement on Sunday, June 8, some customers are having to pay £30 a day just to get to work.
Residents are sharing their frustrations about the price hike, with some even concerned they will no longer be able to sustain travelling to and from their place of work in London.
A regular commuter reached out to KINGSnews to share how this change will impact them.
They said: “As a person who commutes from Apsley into London every day for my work, to be told £17 a day was an undercharge and to have my daily commute rise to £30 in a day is an insult.
“Telling your customer base ‘sorry for the inconvenience’ does not justify outrageous prices just to get to work. People will lose their jobs because they can’t afford to travel.
“Watford Junction is 10 minutes away and it costs half the price of what I pay daily.”

A spokesperson for LNR said: “Due to a technical issue, a number of customers using pay-as-you-go with contactless have been undercharged for some journeys since February 2025.
“This issue was corrected on Sunday, June 8, 2025, and customers are now paying the correct fares. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.”
