A Harrow cricket team made up of boys from local schools, including some from Stanmore, Northwood and Pinner, recently won a gold medal at The London Youth Games.
Team Harrow, consisting of young cricketers from schools including Avanti House, won the tournament at Lord’s after beating Ealing in the final on March 25.
The squad was selected through a series of trials that took place last November, whittling down 80 hopefuls from local schools and clubs who either live in or go to school in Harrow. The team then qualified for the finals of the games in January.
Team Harrow manager Raj Kanagaraj said: “The team put in an excellent performance and they were rewarded for their hard work and commitment. We have got some talented cricketers in Harrow. My task is to identify that talent, select a squad and then play and succeed as a team.
“I would like to thank the players, the parents and my coaching staff.”
Mayor of Harrow councillor Janet Mote was invited to the event and gave out the prizes.
She said: “It was such an amazing day topped off by a Harrow win. I am so proud of my young Harrow cricketers!”
The London Youth Games has a rich and diverse history, stretching back decades and featuring some of the most influential figures in British sport of the last 45 years, royalty, senior political figures and more than 1.5 million Londoners. While similar youth events across the UK have come and gone, the London Youth Games has not only survived since launching in 1977, it has thrived.
