A medical student from Pinner has gained a top prize in a prestigious national award ceremony for his ‘outstanding’ research project.
Niraj Doshi, has been recognised in the 2021 Dr Falk Pharma/Guts UK charity national awards for his summation of his international research project into the genomes associated with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Trivandrum, India.
The fifth-year University College London Medical School student will be awarded a £1,000 prize at the British Society of Gastroenterology Annual Meeting in June 2022. There he will also meet with, and showcase his project to, some of the most illustrious names in gastroenterology and hepatology.
Niraj Doshi said: “‘I am extremely grateful to Guts UK and Dr Falk for their generosity in awarding me this prize and helping to raise awareness of the need for research into metabolic liver disease.
“The results of this study will help to improve our understanding of the processes underlying the development of NAFLD, and facilitate further research into how this disease may be detected at an earlier stage. It will also shed light on targets for new drugs, many of which are being developed to target specific genetic pathways.”
