TIP TROUBLE: Council responds to Stanmore resident’s fly tipping complaints

Published on: 8th February 2023   |   By: Jacob Collick   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Stanmore resident has complained about the state of fly tipping in the area.

Court Drive next to London Road has become a notorious site for fly tipping. An incident in January saw two buggies dumped next to a commercial bin along with bags of rubbish.

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It’s got a lot worse over the last six months. There is a commercial bin on the pedestrian footpath where it shouldn’t be, and I’ve seen rats every day now.”

Harrow Council say they responded quickly to the complaints and claim to be doing everything they can to respond to incidents, but added that it’s difficult to legislate against. They also said that they passed on the details of the fly tipper to the relevant enforcement agency.

A spokesperson for Harrow Council said: “Fly tipping isn’t just disgusting; it’s a criminal offence. Unfortunately, there is a minority who don’t take pride in keeping our borough clean and tidy – and we are stepping up our enforcement to tackle fly tipping. This includes reviewing our CCTV provision in fly tipping hotspots.

“We take all reports of fly tipping seriously and investigate them when we receive them through  our website. Our officers are out every day inspecting reported fly tips across the borough and where there is evidence found, the necessary investigations are carried out and fines are issued.

“We ask everyone to report fly tipping through our website at www.harrow.gov.uk/streets/fly-tipping”

Since the end of January, Harrow Council also offer free bulky waste collections for residents, with anyone in Harrow able to have up to four items picked up free of charge. It is hoped that this will reduce incidents of fly tipping, as well as save the council money in the long term.
