THUMBS DOWN: Chalfonts MP angry as HS2 gets Notice to Proceed

Published on: 17th April 2020   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

Dame Cheryl Gillan, MP for The Chalfonts, said she is surprised and disappointed after the controversial high-speed rail project HS2 got formal approval from the government for construction work to begin despite the country being in lockdown.

Dame Cheryl and the county’s other MPs say they are surprised and disappointed at the announcement from the Department of Transport in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.

The group say the business case should be assessed after the pandemic ends.

Dame Cheryl MP explained: “With the warnings from the Office of Budget Responsibility that GDP could shrink by 35 per cent, we should not be taking additional steps to cement our commitment and finances to an infrastructure project where the business case is now officially “poor.” I will be writing to the National Audit Office to call for an immediate examination of this Notice to Proceed at a time when the country’s finances will be needed to rescue our economy rather than continuing with the construction of HS2.”
