The Amersham Hospital Garden Volunteers have won Volunteer Team of the Year at the Unsung Hero Awards.
The awards were established in 2015 to recognise non-medical and non-clinical NHS staff and volunteers.
The team were recognised for the work they’ve undertaken over the last three years, which includes revitalising and maintaining gardens and outdoor spaces across the Amersham Hospital site. This work has been supported by the local community, charitable funds and the trust’s management board.
Garden volunteer Hugh Chamberlain said: “We all know how important, beautiful and calming outside spaces are for our mental health and wellbeing, so we’re all thrilled and delighted to have received this special award. It’s such a lovely team to be part of and we all feel very proud of what we are achieving – team work really is the dream work.
“We all find it so rewarding, especially with the lovely comments we get from staff and patients on how they really appreciate the transformation to the spaces and how it is so nice to have these calming areas to rest and recharge in nature.”
Bridget O’Kelly, chief people officer at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “It’s wonderful that the garden volunteers have been recognised for all their hard work over the last three years to rejuvenate various courtyard spaces for both patients and staff at Amersham Hospital. Hugh and the team are constantly thinking of new ideas, engaging with the local community, and putting the mental health and wellbeing of others at the forefront of their projects.”
