TERRIFIC TOURNAMENT: Tennis players from Edgware raise record-breaking amount at annual event

An Edgware tennis club has broken its own fundraising record at this year’s Charity Handicap event.

On Sunday, June 30, Acorn Lawn Tennis Club raised £3,400 for Cancer Research UK and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore.

A total of 48 tennis players joined forces in a doubles tournament that saw the highest-ranking players team up with the lowest ranking. In the end, it was 12- and 14-year-old brothers Daniel and David Bota who took home the trophy.

According to chairman Steve Phillips, the club has long held a Charity Handicap event to raise money for charities of a personal importance to the members of Acorn. The annual tournament was begun after the death of former Acorn member Giancarlo Campioni, with the trophy named after the much-missed player.

This year, members chose to raise money for the RNOH, where both club secretary Jeff Rubenstein and treasurer Dennis Favish are volunteers.

Alongside the tennis, around 80 guests came along to the clubhouse to take part in an auction and raffle dubbed “the best in local tennis”. Among the prizes up for grabs were a wine bottle signed by a former Prime Minister and dinners for two at five-star restaurants.
