The Peace Hospice in Watford received a very special visit from their president, Moira Rennie MBE, to mark 40 years since the creation of their Hospice at Home service.
After being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 1985 in his mid-30s, Iain made it clear that he did not want his last memories to be in a hospital ward. Instead, he longed to be surrounded by his family at home.
Five nurses worked together to support Iain and his family as, during that time, hospice organisations were unable to offer home visits.
But after receiving the go-ahead from Iain’s GP and district nurse, the five nurses were able to provide 24-hour nursing cover. Ten weeks later, Iain passed away peacefully at home.
The nurses were left feeling compelled to continue providing the same free-of-charge care to other terminally ill patients.
So, Iain Rennie Hospice at Home was born, and today continues to offer services for people diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.
