PARKING PALAVER: Ricky residents speak out on council’s proposed changes

Published on: 1st August 2024   |   By: Sophia Sheera   |   Category: Uncategorized

Residents of Heron Close and Moss Close in Rickmansworth were alarmed to receive a letter on Friday, May 17, suggesting that weekend parking restrictions between April and September are soon to be updated.

Currently, the Harefield Road locality is covered by a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) made in 2001. However, following a resident-led campaign, Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) agreed to under-enforce restrictions. This was done informally, with the originally TRO left unchanged.

This May, TRDC announced that it would reconsult on parking policy in the area, referencing the official rules rather than the informal agreement. The letter promises not only to tighten defunct restrictions, but also to add double yellow lines on several new junctions.

The letter has left residents fearing that TRDC will again start enforcing parking restrictions.

A TRDC spokesperson said: “The original TRO which contains the seasonal restrictions [around] Harefield Road, Rickmansworth, was made by Hertfordshire County Council and implemented in 2001.

“Following other requests for additional restrictions in the area, a decision was made to consult on a new TRO which seeks to address these requests and to update the older seasonal restrictions.

“The most recent consultation ran until June 10 and the responses are currently being reviewed by our traffic engineers. The results will be reported to local ward councillors before any decision is taken on whether to implement the proposed scheme.”

Mike Stimpson, veteran campaigner and president of Rickmansworth Residents’ Association, said: “TRDC is working on incorrect data. The district council should have updated their maps back in 2003, when restrictions were lifted.

“Residents don’t want any change – the system works as it is.”
