Rickmansworth Lawn Tennis Club are celebrating their oldest playing member, Jill Lacey, who continues to play at the age of 90.

Jill’s journey with tennis began at the age of 11 during the summer term at her new school, wielding a wooden racket. She recalls having a coach at school who resembled Fred Perry, dressed in long white flannels and a sports jacket.

The coach primarily taught scoring and the rules of the game, rather than practical skills, though Jill subsequently had sessions with a club coach to improve her volleying skills. She played for the club’s 2nd team in her younger years.

Speaking to RICKYNews, a spokesperson for the club said: “Jill still has a great joy for tennis, with the most enjoyable aspect being meeting cheerful, friendly people. The camaraderie, fresh air, exercise and laughter are what keep her spirits high and make the game so special.

“As well as still playing regularly to a high standard, she also enjoys watching tennis on TV and at club events. She has fond memories of attending Wimbledon a few times. One memorable experience was seeing a young Boris Becker, then unknown, stride by with two enormous tennis bags. He went on to win the Men’s Singles title that year, making it a day to remember.

“Jill’s story is a testament to the enduring love for tennis and the joy it brings, regardless of age.”
