Police have confirmed that reports in the national press of St Albans being on “lock down” after a stabbing were false.
The Daily Express published a story on their website on September 2 claiming parts of the city were locked down owing to an armed suspect being on the loose.
However, the story was inaccurate with Hertfordshire Constabulary quick to dismiss the claims as “inaccurate”.
They said: “The social media rumours of a stabbing are not correct.
“Police were called at around 10.11am today following reports of a robbery at a shop on French Row, St Albans. It is reported that a male was in possession of a knife. No injuries have been reported.
“Enquiries are continuing to trace the suspect, and residents may see an increased police presence in the area as armed officers have been deployed.”
The Daily Express later added additional info to their original story regarding a lockdown, which they appear to have got from social media, was inaccurate.
It read: “Social media reports of a stabbing are incorrect.”
