In June, the head of the junior school at Northwood College for Girls, Cecile Halliday, spoke at African Caribbean Education Network (ACEM) at Westminster School, London.
ACEM strives to improve the experience for young black people accessing the top through jobs and schools.
Cecile spoke at the ‘Exploring Inclusive Recruitment and Professional Development in the Independent Sector’ event, teaming up with other speakers.
This included Allana Gay, who founded the Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic Educators organisation, and the inspirational former Saracens rugby captain Floyd Steadman, also the author of the moving book A Week One Summer.
The event concentrated on inclusive recruitment and professional development across the independent sector, where they also acknowledge the benefits of working individually to students and teachers alike.
The workshops involved diverse recruitment-from an advert to the interview- followed by a Q&A held by Dr Malcom Cocks, the ACEN delegate and Head of Inclusion at St Paul’s School.
When asked about the talk, Mrs Halliday answered: “These conversations are of vital importance. As stated in our recent ISI report, Diversity and Inclusion is a highlighted strength of Northwood College and is woven within the very fabric of our school. I look forward to joining a further ACEN event in the Autumn term.”
