The cause of recurring flooding from a drain in Causeway car park in Abbots Langley has been traced to drains under residents’ homes.
After heavy rainfall, the drains back up, causing flooding which leaks into nearby gardens. Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) has written to the residents asking them to fix the drains.
However, the residents have complained to local councillors, asking why they are expected to foot the bill for drains that they don’t use.
Speaking to Abbots News, Abbots Langley councillor Vicky Edwards shared: “The letter mentions a deed that shows the outline of the drain and that the drain becomes the responsibility of residents. However, despite multiple requests and queries from me and the residents, no deed has been provided showing that the residents have responsibility for the drain and not the council.”
Councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst, Leader of TRDC, said he does not believe large-scale digging would be required, and that though he understands the residents’ complaints, the drains are legally theirs.
