‘TAX GRAB!’ Northwood and Ruislip community shares frustration over new green waste charge

Published on: 12th March 2025   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

Northwood and Ruislip residents have shared their opinions on Hillingdon Council’s proposal to implement a green waste charge.

Hillingdon Council has launched a consultation detailing proposals to introduce a £70 charge for 2025/26 for the collection of a household’s garden waste.

The consultation states: “The charge would support the running costs of the service and ensure it’s paid for by those using it – rather than the cost being shared by all taxpayers, including those without gardens.

“Our garden waste collection service would continue to offer residents better value for money than neighbouring boroughs through a cheaper rate per collection.”

The council also said that residents without a subscription will still be able to take their garden waste to civic amenity sites for free.

Ruislip resident and Hillingdon Labour councillor Sital Punja said: “There is a lot of anger about this. The council has always taken pride in not charging for green waste collection.

“The Conservative cabinet blames global economics, but the reality is that they have spent the reserves, mismanaged the finances and are asking residents to foot the deficit of £2.5million that they need to balance Hillingdon Council’s books.”

Facebook has been inundated with residents sharing their frustration.

One said: “Just another tax grab! Just watch tidiness in the area go further downhill if people can’t dispose of their garden waste for free.”

Another said: “I worked in Ealing grounds maintenance for years. It was evident when they started charging for garden waste and reducing collections to fortnightly that the amount of fly tipping went up massively.”

The consultation closes on Monday, March 31. Find out more at www.shorturl.at/qBY0k

Time for a complete clear out of all incumbents in Hillingdon council a complete reset, also reduce the amount of councillors, 65 is far to many not very efficient. Replacement candidates should have to show a proven track record they can count without having to remove their socks when they get to 10. Also proof they have been trusted at least once in the past with someone else’s money, spouses and children don’t count also PA’s or secretary’s as they are probably related as well. Maybe if they used a toe to represent a unit of 10 they could theoretically get to 110 it’s a start Gold Star all round.
