TIME WALK: Take a peek behind the scenes at upcoming Heritage Open Days in Watford

Published on: 12th August 2025   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Residents have the chance to explore the history of buildings which have stood in Watford for hundreds of years.

Every September, buildings across the country welcome visitors behind the scenes as part of Heritage Open Days, a national initiative which celebrates heritage, community and history.

Taking part this year is Watford Palace Theatre, which will open its doors to the public on Sunday, September 21.

The theatre was built in 1908 as a modest music hall and hosted legendary musical theatre stars such as Marie Lloyd and Stan Laurel. Today, it showcases both familiar favourites and original new productions.

Also taking part in Heritage Open Days is St Mary’s Church Watford, where visitors will be able to enjoy tours of the tower on Saturday, September 13. The church dates back nearly 800 years to 1230 and is the oldest remaining building in Watford.

On Friday, September 12, and Saturday, September 13, the Pump House Theatre & Arts Centre will welcome visitors to learn about the heritage of the building, which celebrated its 50th birthday last year.

Also on Friday, September 12, residents are invited to enjoy a guided tour of one of just two Grade I listed buildings in Watford. Holy Rood Roman Catholic Church was built in 1890 by architect John Francis Bentley, who went on to design Westminster Cathedral.
