The Croxley Guild of Sports & Social Club are facing thousands of pounds worth of repairs after a suspected incident of arson took place on the club’s cricket pitch.
Police were called at around 5.04pm on Monday, January 8, following reports of a suspected arson at The Green on New Road, Croxley Green.
Officers attended, alongside colleagues from the fire service, and the fire was quickly extinguished.
The lasting damage, however, means that the artificial cricket strip will need to be replaced, with costs estimated between £3,000 and £5,000.
Bob Dingley, club house chairman, said: “We think people have got onto the pitch and lit a bonfire. Maybe it was innocently done, we’re not sure, but the whole thing will have to be replaced.
“Now we’re looking at how we’re going to raise the funds to do that. We’re talking to the parish council; they may be able to help us. And we’re hoping to do a fundraiser within the club.”
A police spokesperson said: “Enquiries are ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to please contact police via 101 or report online, quoting crime reference number 41/2221/24.”
