A former Hemel Hempstead resident is hoping to inspire more young people to get involved in basketball.
Speaking to Hemelnews, data analyst Adrian Marioghae explained that his love for basketball stemmed from playing for local teams such as Hemel Warriors.
Despite moving to Aylesbury, Adrian often heads back to Hemel to visit his family. Recently, he has noticed that interest in basketball among young people is growing, but there are very few opportunities or quality facilities available.
Adrian said: “I’ve been playing basketball since I was 10, and I’m 32 now! It has always been a big part of my life and instilled values in me like discipline, hard work, dedication, and building relationships with teammates.
“Growing up, I saw my friends getting into drinking and drugs, and I thought if you guys did something to keep you busy, like basketball, you wouldn’t be doing this.”
Now, Adrian wants to inspire young players to get involved in the sport, in the hopes of creating another youth development team in Hemel.
He continued: “If we look at countries like America, or countries in Europe, if someone has an interest in a sport, there are high-quality facilities, good coaches, and nice courts where talents can be born.
“Even though basketball is growing, funding is getting cut and the sport is dwindling. It’s not fair on the kids who want to learn but don’t have the opportunity to go to an academy.
“If you’re scared or feel shy about stepping onto a basketball court, I can honestly say the basketball community in Hemel and beyond is extremely welcoming, and the basketball court is for everyone.”
Adrian is asking those interested in starting a new youth club to contact him at www.facebook.com/adrianmarioghae
