SUPER CYCLERS: Quartet raise nearly £50,000 for charity with 1,000-mile cycle ride

A Watford man has raised £48,600 for Parkinson’s UK after taking on a 1,000-mile cycle challenge, despite being diagnosed with the disease himself.

Richard Stockwell, 51, his son Tom, and his two friends took part in a remarkable journey to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s UK. Beginning on Sunday, September 1, Richard and the team began the John O’Groats to Land’s End (JOGLE) ride, a gruelling 1,000-mile journey from the northernmost to the southernmost point of Britain.

After Richard’s diagnosis of Parkinson’s in June 2021, he was determined to turn the news into positive action, with his family’s support. In May 2022, Richard retired from full-time work to reduce stress and focus on his physical wellbeing.

Richard said: “My motivation for this ride is multifaceted. I had always thought about JOGLE, and when my son Tom expressed a desire to complete it with me, it felt like the perfect chance to merge a personal goal with raising funds for Parkinson’s UK.”

Richard was joined by his son Tom; Ric Thornhill, whom he first met when they worked together in the 1990s; and his best friend, Lawrence Summers.

The JOGLE ride is an intense 13-day challenge, with an additional three days of travel. Richard and his co-riders navigated the demands of the challenge with the support of a dedicated team of volunteers.

Richard continued: “Even when things don’t go well, I try to see the positives. Parkinson’s might win some days, but I aim to win more and feel good when I do.”

Michelle Henderson, community fundraiser for the East of England at Parkinson’s UK, said: “We are so grateful to Richard, Tom, Ric and Lawrence. They have raised an amazing amount. Richard’s determination and resilience, despite having Parkinson’s, is truly inspiring to us all.”
