STRUGGLES CONTINUE: St Albans FC bow out of FA Trophy

St Albans FC let an early lead slip and were consequently eliminated from the FA Trophy in their third round away fixture against Welling United today (Saturday, November 23).

City’s afternoon at Park View Road looked hopeful when they took the lead in the 20th minute through Zane Banton, who slotted home after Sam Merson’s shot was deflected off the ‘keeper. 0-1.

The Saints tested the ‘keeper on more than one other occasion in the first half, but settled for a 0-1 lead going into half time.

The lead never looked overly convincing and two quickfire Welling goals turned the game on its head in the 60th and 62nd minutes. Waldo poked home the first from a rebound and Emmanuel added the second. 2-1.

There was still a glimmer of hope when Welling’s Waldren got sent off for a two footed challenge in the 81st minute, but it fizzled out five minutes later when a Cook free kick beat snuck past St Albans ‘keeper Snedker.

The loss piles pressure on an already struggling St Albans City, who are currently at the foot of the Vanarama National League South.
