A Croxley man is celebrating coming in 15th place in an international duathlon event- despite having been hit by a car the month before.
Mike Wood, 47, is a sales director who lives in the village, but also enjoys competing in duathlon, which consists of both running and cycling portions.
This year, he qualified to represent Great Britain in his age category (45-49) in the sprint duathlon event at the 2023 World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Ibiza from May 5-7.
This was already an impressive achievement in itself, but on Friday, April 7 this year, a major obstacle came up when Mike was knocked off his bike by a car outside Croxley tube station and was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Despite his injuries of a broken collar bone, damaged knee and cuts and bruises, and having to undergo an operation and physiotherapy, amazingly Mike was able to resume training, and eventually compete in the event the following month.
Mike achieved the incredible result of coming 15th in the world, and eighth out of all of the Great British entries to the events in his age bracket.
Mike said: “ I would like to thank all my family and friends, including the Croxley Green community, for their support over the last year.”
