STRONG RESOLVE: Northwood students take part in prestigious European Jiu Jitsu tournament

Five Northwood students smashed their way to success in a European Jiu Jitsu tournament, marking a historical moment for the school.

Fred, Yunis, Rohan, Ashwin and Matt attended the Allstars European Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament on Sunday, March 23.

This was the first time in Merchant Taylors’ School’s history that students had attended, as the sport was only introduced to the school in this academic year.

The group, along with Mr Cataldo, headed to the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in London, where they took part in weigh-ins and spent the morning watching the earlier rounds in preparation for their own.

The event saw talented fighters of all ages from across the world showcasing their skill and passion for the art.

In a post shared by Matt on the school’s website, he said: “Nerves were high (except for Fred, who was either totally unfazed or deserves a drama scholarship). Two of our matches were cancelled — one due to ringworm, another due to a no-show — leaving just three of us to compete.”

After intense matches and some excellent performances, Rohan finished third in his category, while Ashwin and Matt came joint fifth.

Matt continued: “Despite the setbacks, it was an exciting first experience for the team — and it’s only strengthened our resolve to train harder and come back stronger.”
