Pinner resident Eileen Cooks’ story began 100 years ago this month.
She was born on March 5, 1925, near Queen’s Park and was one of three siblings.
Eileen’s mother died at the beginning of the Second World War, when Eileen was only 14. While she lived with her older brother and sister, Eileen worked as a trainee bookkeeper at a local firm.
At the age of 23, she married George. He sadly passed away 11 years later, leaving Eileen with two daughters aged 10 years and six weeks.
Eileen began working at Leek & Westbourne Building Society (later Britannia), where she moved through the ranks and managed several branches.
Her 100th birthday celebration was organised by Harrow Carers.
Eileen’s daughter Miranda, who is her full-time carer, said: “We are very pleased and proud that mum has reached her 100th birthday. She’s had a difficult life, but her strength and determination of character have seen us through some tough times.”
