ABBOTSnews would like to apologise for two errors published on page 40 of our March edition.
In our coverage of the Evergreen Falcons Under 7s, we wrongly labelled them an all-boys’ side after accidentally cropping their goalkeeper, a girl, out of the photo provided by the club.
First of all, we want to make clear that these errors are entirely our own doing, and were in no way influenced by the information provided by the club.
Yesterday, we apologised personally to staff and parents at the club.
We would now like to apologise to the young player who we left out and to our readers.
The errors occurred because the original photograph provided was too wide to fit in our A5 magazine, which meant that the goalkeeper, who was standing on the far right of the team, was unfortunately automatically cut out of the image when we placed it into the designed page.
Therefore, our team did not see the goalkeeper in the photo, and wrongly concluded that it was an all-boys’ side.
While this misstep is embarrassing and frankly, unacceptable, we are sharing it publicly to make clear that the unfortunate omission of the girl has absolutely nothing to do with our values and beliefs as a publication, as suggested by a handful of individuals on social media.
We regularly publish stories about both mixed and girls’ only local teams, which many will have seen on both our website and in our magazines.
