St Albans has been voted the best place to live in the East of England.

The 2019 Halifax Quality of Life Survey, identifies the 50 best places to live in the UK – St Albans finished ninth.

St Albans, the best local authority district in the East, according to the 2019 survey, jumped six places in rankings compared to their position in the 2018 survey.

The survey balances a combination of health, crime rate, exam results, employment, happiness and skills in order to identify the best places to live in the UK.

Orkney in Scotland topped the list, with East Hertfordshire, home to Hertford and Bishop’s Stortford, finishing 14th.

Eight of the 50 cities were in the East of England.

The South East also fared very well in the list with a number of areas in the region getting a spot in the top 50.

Russell Galley, managing director at Halifax, said: “While the South East continues to have the most locations in the top 50, we’ve seen northern areas perform particularly well on education, while they also benefit from lower house prices when compared to average earnings.”
