SQUAD SPLIT: Berkhamsted football club’s title-winning team breaks apart ahead of new season

Berkhamsted FC’s double winning team is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul as the club prepares for its inaugural season in Step 3 of the football pyramid.

At the close of June, just three players from the championship clinching side have committed to playing for the Comrades in the division they fought so hard to reach.

This comes after a purported discrepancy between coach Chris Devane and the board over this season’s budget saw the manager step away from the role.

The club have made a flurry of signings since former AFC Dunstable manager Steve Heath has stepped in, including many of the Dunstable squad’s players.

Berkhamsted have secured the signature of Dunstable forward Louie Collier, who was the club’s top scorer last season with 18 goals and previously played with the Comrades back in the 2018/19 season. Berkhamsted have also signed Dunstable’s goalkeeper, Jamie Head, who last season earned Manager’s, Players’, and Supporters’ Player of the Year accolades, and Dunstable’s goalscoring defender, Sam McClelland, who bagged 14 goals from centre back last year.

Chairman Steve Davis said: “We are probably a couple of weeks behind most other clubs pre-season, but [manager] Steve is starting to build a side that will be competitive at the required level.

“Off the pitch, we are under no illusions that the task is a big one and every effort to stay there will be a challenge from hospitality to crowd control and the ground grading requirements that come with it. We are always looking for more volunteers to help run the club and sponsorship that is vital to compete at this level.

“We hope to see you all back at the Glencar Community Stadium soon where some very good teams will visit our modest stadium. If we can keep our home record as strong as it has been over the years, then we have realistic chance of survival. Up the Comrades.”
