A former Watford FC star has opened up about his time at the club, his spell in prison, and clashes with the former sporting director.
Troy Deeney is often regarded as one of Watford’s most iconic players. During his 389 appearances for the club, he scored 131 goals and captained the team to their 2014-15 Premier League promotion.
On Tuesday, November 12, Deeney appeared on the Under The Cosh football podcast, where he discussed his time playing for the Hornets, as well as the battles he has faced.
In the two-part episode, Deeney talked about breaking into football, finishing nights out at 3am before heading to training the next morning, and spending £80,000 at a Las Vegas pool party to celebrate the club’s promotion. The player also discussed his struggles with alcoholism.
Talking about his toughest opponents, Deeney said: “The biggest one who caught me by surprise actually, Kurt Zouma… No joke, he’s kneed me [and] I felt like I’d been in a car crash. He was tough.”
But what caught listeners’ attention the most was when the former striker delved into an alleged incident with Watford’s former sporting director Cristiano Giaretta. After being left out of a game back in 2021, the two butted heads.
Deeney then grabbed Giaretta around the neck and picked him up off the floor.
Deeney said: “This is where it all came to a head and I’ve never spoken about this publicly, so you’re going to get me in f*****g trouble but it’s the truth anyway, so f**k ‘em.”
