SPEEDING CONCERNS: Concerns raised by councillors following crash in Garston

Published on: 6th January 2023   |   By: Megan Milstead   |   Category: Uncategorized

Concerns have been raised over speeding following a collision in Garston.

Police were called at around 7.45am on Friday, November 18, following a collision on the A405 North Orbital Road in Watford.

No one was reported to have been seriously injured and the two vehicles were recovered.

The police cannot attribute a reason for the collision at this time, but some people have expressed concerns about speeding in the area.

This follows another accident on the A405 on October 23.

Watford borough councillor Richard Wenham said: “Residents are rightly upset with Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) telling them that safety measures on the A405 cannot take place as there are not enough accidents recorded.”

A spokesperson for HCC said: “As we do not have limitless core funding, we must, as agreed and endorsed by the elected councillors, direct our resources to those areas where our work has the greatest potential to reduce the number of collisions, deaths and injuries. To assist with this prioritisation, we produce an annual countywide hazardous sites list, and this stretch of road, with one recorded personal injury collision in the last three years, has not been identified within this list.

“Similarly, we can only fund safety cameras when specific criteria are met. This Speed Management Strategy was endorsed by the police. This location does not meet criteria for HCC-funded cameras.

“However, the revised strategy was amended to allow for third-party funding for cameras, and the local county councillor has a discretionary locality budget which they may choose to use. We understood that an application has been made for Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) funding and a response is awaited. The PCC’s office has confirmed one of their vans is and will continue to be deployed at this location on a regular basis.”

More accidents are caused by drivers inattention than by excessive speed. but it is more difficult to prove that a driver was not paying attention, so, easy to measure, speeding becomes the fall guy
