‘SMOTHERED’: Up-and-coming Hemel actress stars in Sky’s new romantic comedy

An up-and-coming actress from Hemel Hempstead plays a starring role in a new Sky comedy series.

Amber Grappy, 24, plays the recurring character of AJ in the new series Smothered, currently showing on Sky Comedy.

Speaking about her start in acting, Amber said: “I first got involved when I was at The Hemel Hempstead School. In Year 9, I auditioned for the school’s production of Oliver! and I got in. I was so happy, and from then on I just couldn’t get enough!”

The first time she auditioned for drama school, Amber didn’t get in. Though this was disappointing at the time, she says it has helped in the long run.

She added: “I had to learn to live a bit. I’m so glad I had that time out; it made me realise there is so much more in the world.”

On her second year of auditioning, Amber received offers from six of the seven schools she applied for, eventually accepting a place at LAMDA.

Since then, she has performed in several theatrical productions and appeared in some of the UK’s biggest new shows, including BBC horror comedy Wreck and Sky/HBO black comedy The Baby.

When asked on advice she has for anyone looking to break into the industry, Amber said: “You have to trust yourself; you have to learn to be okay with failing and laugh at yourself.

“And remember why you’re doing it. You should be doing it because it brings you joy!”
