SMASHING STUFF: Darts superstar from Watford heads to World Championships

Published on: 2nd December 2024   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

After taking the darts world by storm, Watford resident Martin Lukeman will head to the iconic World Darts Championships later this month.

Martin finished top of Group C in the Grand Slam of Darts in November with a perfect three wins from three games.

The sportsman, whose nickname is ‘Smash’, continued his successful run in Wolverhampton and made history by being the first player to make the Grand Slam final after winning through the Tour Card Holder Qualifiers. It was also his first major final.

However, the deciding clash with the reigning Premier League champion Luke Littler proved to be a step too far, and Martin lost 16-3. Despite the loss, Martin secured £73,500 for reaching the final and defied the odds to qualify for the 2025 Grand Slam of Darts.

Following the match, Martin said: “Well played [Luke Littler] mate, you are a legend. An honour to share the stage with you.

“Really proud of the week overall. Thanks to my family, friends and everyone that has messaged. Means the world. More to come.”

Starting on Sunday, December 15, Martin will head to the famed Alexandra Palace for the World Darts Championship, along with 96 other players. There, he will battle it out for a chance to lift the Sid Waddell Trophy and win a £500,000 prize.

Martin will face Nitin Kumar in their first-round clash on Thursday, December 19, with the winner facing Andrew Gilding on Monday, December 23.
