Three Amersham-based developments have been awarded prizes at the Buckinghamshire Design Awards 2023, which celebrate innovative and sustainable development projects around the county.
On October 3, the panel of judges announced that the Chilterns Lifestyle Centre had won the New Communities category.
Judges found that “the building has had a transformative impact in the surrounding community” and felt that “there had been an interesting application of design to incorporate sport, leisure, and community spaces”.
The Chilterns Lifestyle Centre replaced the ageing Chiltern Pools complex, providing a new community centre, library, youth club and nursery in addition to expanded health and fitness facilities.
Meanwhile, Badminton House was highly commended in the category for Historic Places. Judges praised renovation works conducted on Badminton House after the 18th century building’s façade started bulging along its brickwork.
The panel stated: “The contractor has successfully retained the front wall using a steel frame and welded wire mesh lattice. Timber panelling and other features were adjusted carefully to accommodate the new steel frame.”
Lastly, Chelwood – an architecturally striking modern house located in Chesham Bois – was awarded runner-up in the Unique Buildings Category.
Judges praised the building’s designers for “taking local forms, traditions and crafts, and mixing them with innovative and contemporary systems [as] a key part of the design”.
They added: “Chelwood incorporates many sustainable design principles. To reduce embodied carbon, demolition materials were reused for the sub-base below the ground ventilated void and under the hard landscape areas.”
