A large sinkhole has opened up in the middle of a residential road in St Albans.
The hole in the middle of Elm Road has been reported on social media, with police also spotted at the scene and road closures thought to be in place to limit access for both pedestrians and vehicles.
It is approximately one metre square wide, and an engineer is currently on the scene to assess the extent of the damage.
A spokesman for Hertfordshire County Council said: “As soon as we were made aware of the damage to the road surface an engineer was immediately sent to the area.”
“We are working with partners from St Albans District Council and Hertfordshire Constabulary to keep the public safe while works can be assessed and undertaken. Elm Drive remains closed to traffic and we would ask the public and drivers to avoid the area where possible.”
