A non-profit community benefit society is exploring renewable energy systems in Kings Langley, aiming to help the environment and save residents money on their bills.
Grand Union Community Energy Ltd (GUCE) has been looking into alternatives for village residents, such as a district heating network – a community-wide heating system using highly insulated water pipes to deliver heat to a heat exchanger in each user’s home.
The team presented a report at Kings Langley Parish Council’s Annual General Meeting on April 19.
In 2022, GUCE won a grant to study how heat could be extracted from the Grand Union Canal. They discovered that water flow wasn’t consistent enough to heat more than a few homes.
However, it was discovered that water had previously been extracted from old boreholes beneath the Ovaltine site.
If similar boreholes could be drilled opposite the site, data has revealed that the energy could heat the majority of the homes in Kings Langley.
There is a two-minute survey for residents to fill out on how renewable energy systems can be investigated further, with GUCE keen to explore more options.
