Straight off the back of her World Boxing Council under 18s Muay Thai title win in July, Croxley sporting superstar Ellie Harber has now claimed a silver medal at the World Youth Games in Canada.
Taking place on August 13 and 14, Ellie made it all the way to the final, winning her semi-final fight against a Canadian fighter in the third round with a technical knockout (TKO).
However, despite a hard-fought battle in the final over three two-minute rounds, it was American fighter Poontarika Powell who won the bout. Ellie did remarkably well considering Ellie, weighing 60kg, was fighting someone weighing in at 70kg.
Ellie was competing with nine other athletes from across the country as part of the England team at the games, with the squad eventually winning ‘team of the tournament.’
Ellie said: “In the final it was a hard fight, and my opponent was very strong. I found the weight difference initially daunting, but my coach Lyndon Knowles helped me get my head in the game.
I am pleased with my semi-final performance. It is always nice to get a TKO, and it is great to win a silver medal at the World Youth Games,.
Steve Harber, Ellie’s dad, said: “It was great for Ellie to have her opportunity to fight for England at the games and I was so proud with the performances she put in.”
Ellie trips are all self-funded, so she’s currently looking for support from the Croxley community to help her pursue her sporting career. To donate, visit bit.ly/3u51KNb
She’s also looking for new sponsors to join Careys of London and King Tape. For those interested in supporting this fantastic local athlete, contact Emma Isichei at emmaisichei@hotmail.com
