SHUT DOWN: Only one bank to remain in Stanmore after yet another branch closure

Just one bank will remain in Stanmore as the local NatWest branch is set to close next month.

On October 10, the bank will become the fifth branch to close in Stanmore in the last five years, following the closures of Santander, Halifax, Barclays and Lloyds.

NatWest state that counter transactions for personal customers have decreased by 66 per cent since January 2019, and that there were just four personal customers who came into the branch on a regular basis in 2022.

A spokesperson said: “With the ease of mobile and online banking, fewer people are coming into the bank. This means we’ve had to make some tough choices about which can stay open.

“We completely understand that online banking isn’t right for everyone. We promise that you’ll still be able to talk to one of our team either on the phone, by video or in one of our other branches.”

NatWest have directed residents to the nearest branch in Edgware. However, some are unhappy about this.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “NatWest bank abandoned Bushey village years ago, offering Stanmore branch as an alternative. Now, come October the Stanmore branch is closing. Edgware branch has been offered as the alternative. What future for banking is there?”

The last bank standing in Stanmore is Nationwide, which in June announced its pledge to keep its branches open until at least 2026.
