WILKO CLOSES: Troubled chain to shut down across Hemel Hempstead, St Albans and Watford

The embattled retail company Wilko has announced it will be closing the remainder of its stores in the coming weeks, including shops in Hemel Hempstead, St Albans and Watford.

The high-street chain had previously entered into administration last month, with several stores closing nationally. However, following the falling through of a purchaser deal for the retailer, the GMB Union has announced that after a meeting with administrators, they were told that there is no longer any prospect that the majority of the business will be saved.

The announcement sees Wilko leave the high street after 93 years of trading, and puts 12,000 jobs at risk nationally, with major redundancies expected.

Locally, stores set to close include the large branch inside the Marlowes Shopping Centre in Hemel Hempstead, the branch on Watford’s high street and the shop inside The Maltings Shopping Centre in St Albans. All of the shops are expected to close at some point between now (September 11) and early October.

Andy Prendergast, GMB National Secretary, said: “GMB Union will continue to support our members through this process and will fight to ensure they are consulted as per the law and receive every penny they are entitled to.

“We will fight to ensure people are held accountable for this situation for the simple reason our members deserve so much better.

“GMB will not forget the incompetence that has led to this collapse and will we not forget the dividends paid to the millionaires who gambled workers jobs on their whims.”
