A Garston boxer produced a shock win on his way to bagging a silver medal on his senior debut in Portugal.
On the outskirts of Lisbon, Watford Amateur Boxing Club (Watford ABC) fighter Quinlan Carter competed on September 26 at the Boxing Spirit Box Cup, beating a six-time Spanish National Champion who competed at the 2024 IBA World Championships.
The 19-year-old had not boxed competitively for more than a year before returning to the ring for the tournament.
He then faced a three-time Cape Verde champion the next day, narrowly missing out on gold after a second-day loss.
Watford ABC said there were more than 300 bouts between the three international boxers, while praising Quinlan for stepping up to the level.
A spokesperson for the club said: “Quinlan showed great sportsmanship both in victory and defeat, an absolute credit to Watford ABC. As we say at Watford, we don’t lose, we learn.”
Quinlan will return to action in Denmark next month.
