SHENLEY PARK: ‘Proper old school’ director will be ‘very much missed’

Published on: 13th June 2024   |   By: Sophia Sheera   |   Category: Uncategorized

The trustees of Shenley Park have offered a tribute to the late Glyn Dredge, whose contributions ranged from helping to design the walled garden to planting many of the green space’s trees.

Glyn studied agriculture and sports grounds maintenance. In his free time, he enjoyed mechanics and the challenges of taking on not only his own cars, but broken-down tractors as well. These various pursuits gave Glyn a specialised knowledge of machinery.

Joining John Ely in the creation of Shenley Park, Glyn started working as a gardener with the team in 1991 and later became the park director.

The trustees said: “There was not a tree that Glyn couldn’t remember planting, nor where it came from. He knew all the names of each species, even if those names changed slightly each year.

“He was passionate about preserving heritage varieties of apple and created a new orchard in front of the mansion, predominantly cider apples. It was his intention to start producing Shenley Park cider, with his friends and family subjected to early trials. Unfortunately, he never managed to complete the necessary licencing as COVID-19 came along.

“A character such as Glyn does not come around often. His many skills and wealth of knowledge shall be very much missed here in Shenley Park – they are already, as is he.”
