Ruislip is among Britain’s most commonly mispronounced towns according to a new survey.
Car company, Leasecar.uk carried out a survey to determine the UK’s most mispronounced towns, one of which was Ruislip.
The town is often pronounced wrongly as ‘roo-i-slip, however, the correct pronunciation is ‘rye-slip’.
Other towns besides Ruislip that were commonly mispronounced included; Marylebone, Teignmouth, Bicester, Hunstanton, Cholmondeley, Godmanchester, Southwell and more.
Tim Alcock, who conducted the survey at Leasecar.uk said: “The English language can be challenging at best. Not only do we have words that are spelled and pronounced the same but have different meanings – read, bank, bat and bear are good examples – to complicate things further, some words contain heaps of letters that just aren’t needed.
“In order to prevent confusion, we’ve listed 15 places around the UK that are most often mispronounced, so that drivers can travel with ease and as little embarrassment as possible.”
