The programme for this year’s edition of the St Albans International Organ Festival has been announced, marking the event’s 60-year anniversary.
The festival will return from July 3 to 15 to celebrate the organ and much more. Most events will take place in St Albans Cathedral.
The most spectacular performance is set to be a rare chance to hear the Britten Sinfonia, St Albans Bach Choir and the cathedral’s own choristers filling the building with two monumental works in the same evening – the Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony and Berlioz’s Te Deum.
In another highlight, the Tallis Scholars, who are celebrating their 50th birthday this year, will perform in St Albans for the first time.
The list of exceptional performers goes on and includes evergreen jazz singer Elaine Delmar, Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective pianist Angela Hewitt, tenor James Gilchrist, and violinist Rachel Podger.
Organ-focused events include free Bach Corner lunchtime recitals by outstanding young organists, 15 competition sessions, a prize-winners’ concert, and Judith Weir, the composer of this year’s interpretation competition commissioned work, in conversation.
