The future of Aldenham Reservoir in Radlett has been secured following a recent county council meeting.
The local nature site has been in a place of peril since September of 2019, when inspectors discovered the water source’s dam was in need of long-term repair. The owners then dropped the water level to reduce the pressure on the dam.
Though this helped, it prevented public use of the reservoir, which has been a part of Radlett life since it was created in 1797.
In 2020, the sailing club previously based there had to leave due to being unable to use the water.
Now, after more than three years of waiting, Hertfordshire County Council has voted to approve works that will see the dam repaired and funding for its future maintenance.
Posting on social media, councillor Caroline Clapper said: “This is the combination of 18 months of hard work, following the cross-party motion at Hertsmere to save the reservoir.
“Now, future generations will be able to enjoy this beloved asset. I can’t wait for the return of all users, once again enjoying the jewel of Hertsmere!”
