He said: “We are deeply saddened at the passing of HRH, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. As we mourn his death, we remember with affection and gratitude the lifetime of service given by HRH The Prince Philip, who has ever been at the side of our longest-reigning Monarch, HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

“We understand that people will be keen to show their respect. An online Book of Condolence is available for residents to sign, please visit our website www.watford.gov.uk/prince-philip-condolence to access it.

“To mark HRH The Prince Philip’s death, we are flying the Union Flag at half-mast and I have written on behalf of Watford to HRH Queen Elizabeth II and her family to express our condolences.

“Along with Watford Borough Council Chairman Aga Dychton, I will also be leaving a floral tribute at the Peace Memorial outside Watford Town Hall on behalf of the town.

“We are awaiting further guidance from Buckingham Palace on how best to pay tribute to HRH The Prince Philip. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family at this very difficult time. May he rest in peace.”
