Royal wedding fever sweeps across Hertfordshire

Published on: 23rd April 2018   |   By: Jason Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Hertfordshire has been hit by Royal fever as the county prepares for the wedding of Prince Harry to his fiancée, Meghan Markle, on Saturday May 19.

With a month to go, the countdown has well and truly begun and the party spirit is in full force with the county council receiving a number of applications for community street parties, more babies being registered with royal names and 28 Hertfordshire couples choosing to hold their weddings on the same day as the royal couple.

A total of 51 applications for road closures have been made to Hertfordshire County Council for traditional community street parties right across the county.  Areas getting in on the action and hosting events include Harpenden, Watford, Cheshunt, Bishops Stortford and Potters Bar.

Hertfordshire was crowned as the street party capital during both the Royal Wedding in 2011 and the Queen’s Jubilee in 2012, hosting more street parties than any other county in the country.

Royal names are also proving popular in the county with Harry coming within the top three most popular boys names registered and George and Charlotte ranked within the top ten most chosen names for new babies. Hertfordshire’s registration services records also show that this year has seen the name Megan grow in popularity when compared to last year.

Rob Smith, Deputy Director of Environment (Highways), said:

“We are delighted that our residents are getting into the spirit of the Royal Wedding. We’re very pleased to be able to scrap road closure charges for residential roads without bus routes, giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy the day with their relatives, friends and neighbours.

It’s also interesting to see that the excitement with just one month to go is also spilling over into some other service areas we provide for residents such as registering weddings and births. Let’s hope the nice weather continues and a fantastic day is had by all.”
