ROYAL RUGBY: Thriving Huel Tring Rugby club reflects on excellent start to the season

The new season is well underway at Huel Tring Rugby, with teams from the 1st XV to the under 3s all in action every weekend.

On Saturday, August 31, the club had the honour of hosting the Royal Anglian Regiment in a friendly match against the 3rds & Occasionals, where Huel Tring nudged a 32-27 win.

The Regiment stayed for two nights, camping on the top field and keeping the bar busy from 11am until closing in their Tring 2024 tour tops. They brought with them their families and friends, as well as General Tony Pollard and Major (Rtd) Ian Robinson MBE Regimental Headquarters, who handed out playing caps to some of the Regiment.

The 1st XV has had an excellent start to the season under new head coach Sam Townsend, with 54-10 and 46-24 wins over Harpenden and Bedford Athletic as TRINGnews goes to print.

Sam explained: “Many clubs in this league have substantial resources, with Regional 1 South East being arguably the most competitive league at Level 5 in the country. As a truly amateur club, I am very proud to witness the will and determination of all our senior players, who proudly wear the badge to represent the club in such an impassioned manner.

“In doing so, they continue to demonstrate all of the values of rugby, which are at the core of our club’s ethos and behaviours.”

The 2nd XV had a tough first match away at Oxford but bounced back for a 54-0 defeat of Chesham, while the Colts’ first friendly ended in a 17-17 stalemate at Harpenden.

This season, the club is on a major drive to bring in funds to pay for new floodlights at the pitches, hoping to raise £75,000. To donate, please contact rob.bray@tringrugby.com
